Do I need insurance while I’m in storage?

GO BOX storage insurance rates.

Many people wonder if they need insurance while in storage. The simple answer is yes, if you want to protect your possessions. When you store with GO BOX Storage you are storing at your own risk. This means if you want to insure the safety of your possessions you need to have your own insurance.

I have had people ask me if they NEED insurance. So far the warehouses haven’t had a fire or natural disaster but it could happen. These events are very unlikely, but that is what insurance is for — unlikely events.

If someone is confused about whether they need insurance, the first question I ask is if they presently have household insurance. If they don’t presently have household insurance, likely insurance isn’t that important to them. If someone has household insurance and is thinking about going into storage they need to contact their insurance broker right away. Their insurance broker will be able to tell them if their present household policy includes coverage while in storage or not.

If you are wanting insurance while in storage, here are the steps to ensure your possessions are safe:

  1. Contact your insurance broker BEFORE your possessions go into storage.
  2. If your present household insurance policy includes coverage while in storage, the insurance broker will just want some information about where you are going to be in storage and for how long. The insurance broker will want some details about how your possessions will be stored at GO BOX Storage. There will be no extra costs for you to store your possessions.
  3. If your present insurance policy does not cover your possessions while in storage, you will need to buy extra coverage or a storage rider. This extra coverage is usually a very nominal fee and will be well worth the cost. A rider is added to your existing insurance policy.
  4. If you don’t have household insurance or have sold your house and are going traveling you will still need to talk with your insurance broker and make some arrangement for the safety of your possessions. Normally, you can work something out with your insurance broker. If this is not an option, you can buy insurance coverage from GO BOX Storage. GO BOX Storage sells StorageGuard, an insurance product offered by Johnson Meier Insurance.

If you would like to buy insurance from GO BOX Storage please see the Customer Goods in Storage: Declared Value Rate Chart. You will decide on a Declared Value for your possessions and you will pay the Monthly Insurance Fee in addition to your fee for heated or unheated storage.

SOS TIP: Before you go into storage contact your insurance broker and find out if your present household policy covers your possessions while in storage.
